ADEQUATE MILK SUPPLY

Although breastfeeding is the "natural" way to feed a baby, it is a skill that needs to be learned. New mothers are often concerned about whether they are producing enough milk. For most women, the more often they put the infant to the breast, the more milk they will have.

  POINTS TO STRESS:

- Frequent nursings
- Avoid bottles, formula, pacifiers
- Adequate rest and fluids
- Night feedings in early weeks to build supply, prevent engorgement
- Fatigue and emotional stress will inhibit letdown reflex; REASSURE

  SIGNS OF ADEQUATE INTAKE IN BREASTFED INFANT:

8-12 feeds in 24 hrs. Audible swallowing in baby when milk lets down Baby alert w/good muscle tone and healthy skin Baby content between feeds By day 5, 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hrs. 3-8 soiled diapers every 24 hrs. for the first 6 weeks Wt. gain of 4-7 ounces per week in baby Baby recovers birth wt. by 3 wks of age Mothers breasts may feel full before feeding and softer after feeding.
